From the Wright B Flyer to Artemis II
I read that during NASA’s recent Artemis II mission, the crew carried a 1-inch-square piece of muslin from the original 1903 Wright B Flyer into deep space. This created a powerful link between the dawn of powered flight and the return to space exploration. You might call this another Then-and-Now moment for the Wright Brothers, and for me, it feels especially meaningful.
My Wright Brothers: Then and Now fine art photography series creates a connection between history and the present. In these photographs, I blend historic Wright Brothers imagery with my contemporary photographs at the same locations, allowing viewers to experience the past and present together in a single image.
I am glad to see this photography series still resonates with people. I recently sold two framed photographs from the series to a retired Air Force officer. He kept one for himself and asked me to send another to a friend, also a retired officer. Last year, a corporation purchased 100 copies of the accompanying book as corporate gifts. It is an honor to know that these photographs and the book have found a home with people who understand the meaning and legacy of flight.
The Wright Brothers’ first powered flight changed the world, and its impact didn’t end at Kitty Hawk. Their spirit of invention, experimentation, and persistence lives on today. Artemis II is a reminder that their legacy endures, and I was glad to see the Artemis crew return safely.
