A Little Bit About Me
During my high school years, a friend persuaded me to join him in a photography class at Dayton Public School's Living Arts Center. Little did I know this simple decision would ignite my lifelong passion for photography. I was surprised to find out my father was a photo hobbyist at the same age I was, which led to the discovery of his old photography enlarger tucked away in our attic.
Transitioning to Wright State University, my academic journey initially focused on math and science alongside photography. However, it was the allure of the latter that captured my heart. Guided by a supportive photography teacher, I found myself drawn to graduate school—an avenue I hadn't previously considered. Ultimately, I was accepted into the prestigious Cranbrook Academy of Art, where I earned my Master of Fine Arts degree in 1982.
Post-graduation, I made the conscious choice to pursue a career as a full-time professional photographer, coinciding with my marriage to my college sweetheart, Maria. Together, we've raised two wonderful children, Tom and Maggie.
In 1988, Cleary Creative Photography was born, marking the beginning of my journey as a trusted photographer serving clients locally and nationally. Over the years, I've had the privilege of collaborating with individuals, families, small businesses, and Fortune 500 corporations, capturing precious moments, and creating lasting memories.
In 2015, I was honored to be named a Proud Dayton Original by the Dayton City Commission and Mayor's office, a recognition highlighting my contributions to Dayton's creative landscape. Additionally, my dedication to professionalism led me to achieve the esteemed designation of Certified Professional Photographer from the Professional Photographers of America, signifying my commitment to excellence and ethical practice in the field.
Beyond photography, I indulge in passions such as golf, watching baseball, and playing the guitar. I love homegrown tomatoes, Trader Joe's Irish Breakfast tea, and loved my Mom's apple pie. (with a nod to carrot cake). And yes, I'm unapologetically enthusiastic about Star Wars and Star Trek movies, much to the amusement of my daughter.
Ultimately, I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have spent over three decades channeling my creativity into serving others through the art of photography. It's a privilege I cherish, and I look forward to continuing this journey for many years to come.
