A Photographer's "Vacation" In Myrtle Beach Capturing The Atlantic Ocean
As a professional landscape and fine art photographer, the line between vacation and work often blurs—especially when the Atlantic Ocean becomes your studio. I traded Ohio’s landscapes for the sweeping coastal vistas of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, transforming what could have been a typical beach getaway into a photographic expedition.
Sunrise Photography Capturing Coastal Moments
Using a long-exposure technique, my first photograph was a five-minute exposure that transformed the ocean’s constant movement into a soft, dreamlike composition. The extended shutter time allowed water to blur into a misty, almost painterly effect—a hallmark of fine art coastal photography.
Hurricane Milton
While we were staying in Myrtle Beach, Hurricane Milton went through Florida. I went out to the ocean to create photographs that morning and to see the cloud formation in the aftermath of what was left of the hurricane that devastated Florida.
Creating Dreamlike Seascapes With Long Exposures
My oceanfront hotel provided the perfect vantage point for sunrise photography. Rising before dawn at 6 am, I prepared to capture the first light around 6:40 am, with the full sunrise at 7:15 am. My primary goal was to create ethereal seascape images that transform motion into art.
Bonus Sunset Photograph
While sunrise offered its magic, I also captured a stunning sunset image, showcasing the Atlantic’s dynamic beauty from dawn to dusk. Sometimes, we have to simply turn around and look the other way to find a stunning image right in front of us. As an Ohio-based photographer, I find these rare opportunities to photograph the ocean to be precious and time well spent.
