The historic photo was taken on November 23, 1903. My photograph was taken at the Wright Brothers National Park in North Carolina. I call this the day that almost was the first flight. Reading Orville’s diary for the day, they took the machine out in the morning because the weather reports looked good to make a test flight. There was probably a sense of excitement thinking this might be the day of first flight. It took a few hours to get everything ready for a test flight and by the time they were ready with the plane, the wind had gotten calmer. They had a plane ready to go but no wind. So, they took a photograph and put the plane back in the barn. I liked playing around with all the people at the park that day. I moved a few people in and around the barn. I even left park rangers inside the barn so it looks like they are standing next to Wilbur. I can imagine Wilbur looking out and thinking “Who are all these people?” The quote from Orville’s diary on November 23, 1903 “Wind of 15 miles blowing from west and northwest in morning. We completed repairs by noon and got the machine on the tracks in front of the building ready for a trial from the level. The wind was gradually dying and by the time we were ready was blowing only about 10 miles. After waiting several hours to see whether it would breeze up again, we took the machine back in
