The historical image, taken in Pau, France, is of Wilbur shaking the hand of King Alfonso XIII of Spain. Wilbur Wright had become an instant worldwide celebrity with his flight demonstrations in France, yet he maintained a low-profile while there. Visiting the Louvre Museum and taking long walks alone were among his favorite things to do in Paris. The inventor slept in the hanger with his airplane instead of staying in the local hotel in Le Mans, France. He was a private person who, in most photographs, was stoic. I was surprised by the genuine smile and self-confident expression in this image and was thrilled to use it. Digitally I put the King of Spain inside the ropes with the race teams and Wilbur on the other side among the general public.
