The Staten Island ferry goes between Manhattan and Staten Island and travels right past the Statue of Liberty. I wasn’t happy with the photographs I created on my Staten Island ferry ride because the Statue of Liberty was too far in the distance. I then decided to take the Statue of Liberty boat from Battery Park out to Liberty Island. I captured this photo from the upper deck as the ferry was arriving at Liberty Island. Even before making the trip to New York, I envisioned a photograph just like this one with people looking out at the Statue of Liberty. I am thrilled with the way it turned out. I love how the four young ladies are posing for a selfie, and the gentleman is taking pictures as if he can see Wilbur flying around the Statue of Liberty. “In the air, Wright seemed to pause for a moment to pay the homage of an American aviator to the lady who attests his country’s destinies. Then suddenly turning eastward with the wind, he sped rapidly over the waves while the harbor crafts shrieked their welcome, and cheering men and women bore witness that our Lady Liberty had been visited by one of her children in a vessel needing only the winds on which to sail.” New York Evening Sun Newspaper
